Initiating an office recycling scheme involves two basic steps:

Setting up the infrastructure for the collection and storage of materials.
Arranging for a collector to regularly pick up materials for recycling.

The first step will require some thought regarding the best way to collect and store materials. Often materials are collected in recycling containers placed at work stations and in central locations i.e. lunch and printing areas, mail or photocopying rooms. Recycling containers should be accessible to all staff and clearly marked.

Setting up an office recycling infrastructure requires some investment, particularly in the provision of recycling containers. There are a number of organisations which manufacture such containers, some of which are listed below:

Manufacturers of recycling containers are often happy to send free catalogues of their products on request. It is advisable to collect a few catalogues to compare designs and prices.

The second step in taking forward a recycling scheme is to choose a recycling collector.

Recycling collectors operating in the London area include 'not-for-profit' community businesses, as well as more commercial recycling concerns. A list of recycling collectors operating in London is given below. These organisations are categorised according to the services they provide, as follows:

Computers and Electronic Equipment. Refurbishers and recyclers that collect unwanted electronics for refurbishment and resale/redistribution (often to schools and charities) and/or for recycling components.

Confidential Waste and Security Shredders. Offer data destruction services, often through the shredding and recycling of confidential papers.

Recycling and Waste Management Companies. Provide large-scale integrated waste management solutions.

Office Furniture Schemes and Merchants. Collect or purchase office furniture and fittings for resale/redistribution.

Paper/General Office Waste Collectors. Collect office waste materials for recycling.

Recovered Paper Merchants. Involved in the purchase and sale of waste paper as a commodity.

Scrapstores and Resource Centres. Collect clean, reusable material for education, play and art/craft activities.

Toner Cartridge Collectors. Charities, businesses or brokers involved in the collection of toner cartridges (for laser printers, photocopiers and plain paper f machines) which are remanufactured for resale.

It is advisable to decide which materials you would like to recycle, and contact several appropriate recycling collectors to obtain further information regarding their services and business practices.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Some of the organisations listed will charge for their services, and some will not. This is entirely dependent on the type of waste material collected; the quantity and quality of material available; and the type of organisation undertaking the collection. Recycled Products

The collection of materials is just the first stage of the recycling process. In order for recycling to be successful, there must be a demand for the materials recovered. Purchasing products with a recycled content, such as office stationery and toner cartridges, creates such a demand and helps to 'close the loop' (this referring to the process of recycling).
