Plastics

activity 1: identifying plastics

Make a collection of different types of plastic wrappings and containers.

Use the information card and see if you can find any markings or words on the wrapping or container that tell which type of plastic it is made from. Try to find at least one example of each of the six types.

Fill in the first 2 columns on the table. In the first column use the abbreviated (shortened) form of the name of the plastic.

activity 2: floating experiment

1.         Cut out small pieces of plastic from the samples. It is easier to use containers and bottles of different colours.

2.         Fill a see-through container with water. A glass jar, or plastic fizzy drinks bottle with the top cut off, would do. Add a small amount of washing up liquid.

3.         Add the pieces of plastic and stir.

4.         Make a note on your table of which samples float and which sink.

5.         Gradually add salt to the water and stir. Note any changes that take place.

6.         Record your findings on the chart.
